Hokkaido – Sapporo Snow Festival

Event period: February 4–11, 2026
The Sapporo Snow Festival is the city’s largest winter event, featuring three venues with distinct themes. At the Odori Park site, large and small ice and snow sculptures line the park from blocks 1 to 11. The Tsudome site offers interactive attractions such as snow slides and snow rafting, along with a variety of food stalls. The Susukino site focuses on showcasing dreamy and delicate ice sculptures.

Akita – Yokote Snow Festival

Event period: Kamakura Snow Huts / Snow Art: February 13–14, 2026; Bonten Festival: February 16–17, 2026
The Yokote Winter Festival is Akita’s signature winter event, famous for its snow huts known as “Kamakura” and the Bonten ritual. During the festival, around 80 snow huts are open to visitors, who are treated to sweet sake and grilled rice cakes. During the Bonten dedication festival, teams carry elaborately decorated Bonten poles to shrines. Visitors can also try making mini snow huts and enjoy local product fairs, making it a lively winter must-see event.

Niigata – Tokamachi Snow Festival

With the theme “befriending snow and having fun with snow,” this festival is known as the birthplace of modern snow festivals in Japan. During the event, the entire city becomes a festival venue, featuring food-filled festival plazas and snow art exhibitions created by local residents. Visitors can enjoy snow activities, experience snow country culture, and watch dazzling rainbow snow fireworks at night.

Hokkaido – Asahikawa Winter Festival

The Asahikawa Winter Festival is famous for its ice sculptures and immersive sound-and-light performances. Alongside stage shows, the festival features massive themed snow sculptures and handmade snow lanterns created by locals. At night, projection mapping and fireworks transform the venue into a magical winter wonderland. Visitors can also enjoy a 100-meter-long snow slide and sample local cuisine.

The theme of the 67th Asahikawa Winter Festival in 2026 is “Hang out with Vulpixes!” In collaboration with Pokémon, Alolan Vulpix and Vulpix from the Hokkaido Adventure team will appear. For details, be sure to check the official website.

Hokkaido – Jozankei Snow Candle Way

Held at Jozankei Shrine, the Snow Candle Way event features hotels and ryokan decorated with snow candles, symbolizing togetherness and shared joy. Around 1,000 handmade snow candles illuminate the shrine grounds, creating a dreamy atmosphere that draws many visitors.

Aomori – Hirosaki Castle Snow Lantern Festival

Event period: February 6–11, 2026
One of the five major snow festivals of Mutsu, this event showcases around 150 snow lanterns and snow sculptures made by citizens, along with about 300 illuminated mini snow huts. The Tsugaru Nishiki-e Grand Corridor, created using artwork from the Hirosaki Neputa Festival, adds to the fantastical atmosphere.

Yamagata – Zao Snow Monsters Illumination

Yamagata’s Zao is internationally famous for its unique “snow monsters,” trees covered in ice and snow. Visitors can ride the ropeway through the night sky to see the snow monsters illuminated by colorful lights, revealing a completely different scene from daytime, like an art museum of light. You can also take the new snow vehicle, the “Night Cruiser,” for a close-up view of the illuminated snow monsters.

Tochigi – Yunishigawa Onsen Snow House Festival

The illuminated “mini snow house” have been recognized as a Japan Night View Heritage site and selected as one of the top three night illuminations in the Kanto region. The main venue is the Heike no Sato tourist area and its surroundings, with the entire Yunishigawa Onsen village enveloped in this winter-only magical scenery. Every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday during the event, hundreds of mini snow huts are lit with candles, creating a dreamlike world. Behind the snow huts are traditional thatched houses blanketed in snow. Visitors can enjoy snow activities or relax and warm up in the on-site hot springs.
